Studies on Effect of Seaweed Extract on Onion under Water Stress Condition
Main Article Content
Abstract
In order to increase crop productivity, inorganic and chemical fertilizers are widely used in farming which are significantly affecting human health and environment. Bio-stimulants like seaweed extracts (SWE) can be applied in agriculture as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to toxic fertilizers. Bio-stimulants are organic and bio-degradable substance which provide nutrients to crops and improve productivity and growth when they are applied along with fertilizers. Seaweed extracts have been emerged as the solution to this problem in various studies. This study reviews key findings of those studies and highlight existing knowledge gaps in using such bio-stimulants. SWE is known to improve nutrient uptake and improve crop yield under both normal and stressed conditions. SWEs have various active compounds like polyphenols, polysaccharides, and phytohormones. Some of these elements contain healthy properties for plants. There is a lack of studies on molecular mechanisms of seaweed extract on onion crops. This study summarizes the role of SWEs as well as their bioactive properties as bio-stimulants. It is found that applying seaweed extract on target areas can improve accumulation of protein and crop yield.
