Effect of nano powder of Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata Linn.) bark hydro-alcoholic extract in the management of hypothyroidism – a series of three cases.

Abstract

Background:


Hypothyroidism is a metabolic condition characterized by the deregulation of thyroid hormones. Its prevalence rate is 11.4% and is increasing. The only treatment for hypothyroidism is the replacement with synthetic hormones. In present study effect of nano powder of Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata Linn.) bark hydro-alcoholic extract was evaluated to see possible effect in cases which show increased thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in spite of hormone replacement therapy.


Objectives:


This case series was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nano powder of Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata Linn.) bark hydro-alcoholic extract in patients of hypothyroidism with TSH levels above normal reference range.


Method:


Three known cases of hypothyroidism with ongoing synthetic hormonal management (thyroxine) and TSH levels more than normal reference range (5 mIU/ml) were enrolled. Patients received nano powder of Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata Linn.) bark hydro-alcoholic extract in form of capsules at dose of 2.5 gm per day for 60 days. Subjective assessment was done every 15th day on basis of Billweicz diagnostic index, standard gradation scale, while, thyroid profile, lipid profile was evaluated at baseline and at the end of 60 days.


Results:


In this series of three patients all patients TSH levels were observed to be reduced along with T4 levels. T3 levels minimally raised which was less at baseline after treatment of 60 days. Lipid profile shows minimal reduction in cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL. BMI of patients which was increasing over time before treatment had become stable during the period of two months of treatment.


Conclusion:


Hypothyroidism has a major impact on body functions, which slow down as thyroid levels rise. In this case series of three patients, we observed changes in TSH levels as well as symptoms, which helped us understand that nano-particles increase the efficacy of the drug, allowing it to reach the micro level and act on the hormones
